When John Milkovish started his Beer Can House in 1968, he had no idea what kind of attraction it would develop into. Milkovish, a retired upholsterer for Southern Pacific Railroad, has covered his home with siding made from aluminum beer cans. Not only does it look unique, but it greatly lowers his energy bills. “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” did a show about the Beer Can House, and they estimated that more than 50,000 beer cans have been used in its construction.
Vince Young was part of one of the most famous national championship games in college football history, when he scored the winning touchdown at the Rose Bowl on 4th down with just 19 seconds to go in the game. The quarterback went on to have a mixed career in the NFL, but he is undoubtedly one of the biggest local heroes to hail from South Houston.
The University of Houston has produced many famous alumni, including professional golfers, astronauts, Carl Lewis, Hakeem Olajuwon and a score of famous actors. Jim Parsons, who plays the nutty physicist Sheldon Cooper on hit smash TV show “The Big Bang Theory,” got his BA in Theatre at the university. The most famous alumni may be the acting brothers Randy and Dennis Quaid.
One of the best things about being in Houston is that it is one of the few cities in the country that has professional companies in residence in all the major performing arts, including theatre, opera, ballet and symphony.
