Why Storm Preparedness Matters

Storms can put your business at risk, endangering your building, assets, and inventory. They can even create unsafe working conditions. Without a watertight barrier, rain and snow leave floors wet and slippery, increasing the risk of falls and accidents.

Strong doors may not only help prevent severe flooding, they also protect against flying debris during hurricanes and windstorms. In extreme cases, poor maintenance can leave hardware weak, corroded, and unsecured – unable to withstand pressure from high winds. Doors might buckle or blow off entirely, possibly injuring staff and leaving your business unsecured.

Storms that create wind and water damage

During severe weather events, poor insulation can send temperatures plummeting inside your workplace. Failing weatherseal lets cold air seep in and interfere with your climate systems, raising energy costs and damaging productivity.

Vortex service teams deliver proactive solutions to help prevent damage, avoid costly repairs, and prolong its life. In order to prepare your doors for extreme and unpredictable weather, our technicians provide a range range of preventative maintenance, including:

  • Tightening loose fasteners and mountings
  • Inspecting locks, slats, sections, sprockets, brackets, and weather seals
  • Lubricating rollers, hinges, guides, bearings, and other applicable hardware
  • Checking and adjusting safety devices
  • Discussing options for additional preventive features and products

We provide critical, on-site support for a wide range of industries, in order to protect assets, minimize harm, and enhance security before the event. Once the event has passed, our emergency response teams act fast to assess damage, replace broken parts or hardware, and get your operation back up and running, and your building secured. Besides reducing long-term costs, we also improve peace of mind for businesses in areas at risk of:

Hurricanes, Tornadoes, & Flooding

We install temporary and permanent upgrades to prevent water damage, wind stress, and structural breaches, including flood doors, threshold seals, and bracing systems. Our board-up services secure broken entryways after the storm, while we source and install replacements matching the needs of your building ‒ everything from storefront systems to hollow metal doors.

Wildfires & Smoke

Our inspectors ensure your fire-rated doors are up to code and properly sealed, enhancing gaps, thresholds, and weatherstripping to prevent smoke from entering your building. At the same time, we tighten structural anchors and connection points, in order to guard against the high winds that often accompany wildfires.

Extreme Heat

Vortex evaluates materials, finishes, and components to identify doors vulnerable to warping, expansion, and seal degradation. Besides shoring up gaskets, thresholds, and weatherstripping, we also renovate existing entryways by adding high-speed doors, insulated doors, air curtains, and strip curtains to prevent heat infiltration and promote cooling efficiency.

Snowstorms

In addition to sealing gaps, replacing worn weatherstripping, and adjusting thresholds to block cold air and prevent moisture buildup, we also lubricate hinges, locks, and motors to prevent freezing and mechanical failure. Afterwards, we check for frost damage, frozen parts, and broken hardware that could impair normal operations and leave you vulnerable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What doors are best for hurricane-prone areas?

Steel doors provide the best, all-round protection from severe weather. Impact and corrosion-resistant, they function reliably in storm-prone areas, often for up to 30 years, with few long-term effects. Aluminum and laminated glass are popular alternatives. Though not as durable as steel, they provide excellent protection without sacrificing visibility or aesthetics. If you aren’t interested in upgrading your doors, installing hurricane shutters provides strong protection at a lower upfront cost.

How fast can Vortex respond to an emergency?

In most instances, Vortex technicians respond to emergencies within the same day. Thanks to our fully stocked service vehicles, many problems can be addressed in a single visit.

Can you help secure my building if a door or window is damaged during a storm?

Vortex emergency repair and board up services cover and secure damaged windows and entryways, providing a firm barrier against pests, vandals, and outside elements while we gather the supplies necessary to replace the damaged glass.

Do you provide reinforced doors or safety upgrades for future storms?

Yes. Vortex technicians can retrofit your building with impact resistant glass, frames, and hardware. There are options available to help provide reinforcement and security to your building.  We are happy to discuss options and availability.
