The area was one of the centers of the Civil Rights Movement, thanks in part to leadership provided by graduates of Atlanta University Center, the largest and oldest consortium of historically black colleges and universities. Prominent figures such as Dr. King, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Benjamin Mays were all affiliated with the institution, which prides itself on its science, humanities, and social justice programs.
The consortium is located near the Herndon Home, a National Historic Landmark. Commissioned by Alonzo Herndon, a former slave and one of the country’s first black millionaires, the 15-room mansion was designed by his wife in the Beaux Arts Classical style and was constructed entirely by the city’s African-American craftsmen between 1908 and 1910.
